What Is a 'Hormone', Anyway?

We all know hormones exist, and we use the term loosely in conversation. But, do we really know what they are and how they affect our health?
The word hormone is defined as follows:
(n) A substance, usually a peptide or steroid, produced by one tissue and conveyed by the bloodstream to another to effect physiological activity, such as growth or metabolism.[From Greek hormon, present participle of horman, to urge on, from horme, impulse.]
If we look at the above definition, it becomes clear that hormones are the way our body expresses its impulses (we all know that!). But, it also gives us a clue that is very essential to understanding how they impact our state of health, and some keys to improving their function.
I will be giving a 2 hour lecture on hormones, called The Tao of Hormones, this Sunday, May 17th, from 6:15 - 8:15PM at Jennyoga. This email will give a taste of some of the things you will learn about. I invite you to the seminar to learn even more.
Hormones, at their most basic level, are simply commands or instructions. They are created and released into the blood by a gland, such as the ovary or pancreas, and they "tell" other cells and tissues to do something.
The analogy I like to use is that of a carpenter. Imagine your cells are the carpenter, and the hormone is the boss. The boss tells the carpenter, "Go build a house." The carpenter then goes off to do his job.
However, it is important to understand that hormones are not nutrients. Nor are they enyzmes, amino acids, or vitamins. A hormone is merely a command, a means of communication.
When hormones are received by the cells (analogous to our carpenter being told "build a house"), this command is non-negotiable. The cell at least HAS to try, it must make an attempt to comply with the command.
And, this is where many of us start to have problems.
If the boss tells the carpenter, "go build a house", but does not supply any materials or helpers, the carpenter is going to be pretty stressed out. He will have to do all the work himself. Not only that, he will not have the materials he needs to do it.
The result of this scenario is a predictable one -- a poorly planned, poorly constructed house that takes forever to build.
But, if the boss says, "Go build a house!", and the carpenter has at his disposal plenty of supplies and adequate helpers, the house is completed in a timely fashion and is very high quality.
So, if your cells are the carpenter, and hormones are the boss, nutrients are the buliding materials and helpers. And the plans? That, my friend, is your DNA.
So what about those plans? Even if your cells don't have the proper nutrients, enzymes, and other cofactors, that DNA is still there. The plans are still intact.
However, your cells, without the ability to carry out the hormone's instructions efficiently, will cut corners to at least get SOME of the job done.
THIS is how our bodies start to fall out of sync with their genetic code, and how the healing process eventually breaks down.
